This is Arlene Paculan, Executive Producer, signing on! Here’s what happened at WonderKids :)
Kat Leonard and I were joined by awesome songwriters, Matt Gerber and Bryan Pickell, to help facilitate the workshop. We also partnered up with Dennis from One Parent Families Association as well! The fun event took place at The Central in Toronto!
The event started with a short presentation by us leaders. Kat and I did our Michael Jackson mash-up to show the participants that you can take a popular song and personalize it with your music style and you can also put them together so that it becomes a seamless song.
Then Matt Gerber performed his song “You’re a Lion, Ain’t that Dandy” with his ukulele!
Then Bryan Pickell sang a story about a cricket reminding us to 'believe in your talents’.
Then the four of us performed the song “Walking on Sunshine" for the kids to get familiar with, if they weren’t already. Why, you ask? Because we chose that song to use for the songwriting workshop portion! We taught them that you can take a song and change the lyrics but keep the melody. It was an exercise that we thought would help them open up their creative lyric side!
We travelled up to the 2nd floor leaving the parents on the main floor to enjoy a yummy buffet brunch that the Central prepared for them.
Upstairs, Kat started off the workshop with some icebreaker/improvisation games. It was important to get everyone to acknowledge who their peers were and to become comfortable with the space.
Once the silliness was done, Matt talked about what the difference was between VERSES and CHORUSES.
Here are the other facilitators listening intently. :)
Soon after that, Bryan Pickell led the group to the songwriting!
The song “Walking on Sunshine” was chosen to re-write and the theme the group came up with was MUSIC. Soon the kids were asked to brainstorm about words that were related to music and also find words that rhymed with them.
The kids were very attentive and they showed us that they learned how easy it was to write lyrics! This is truly amazing as we want to empower people to use their creative side and if we can teach them at a young age, that’s such a great accomplishment. :)
Then we went back downstairs and performed the new song to their loving parents. It was fantastic to see what these kids could do in such a short time!
Check out the lyrics the kids came up with (and Kat!):
Thank you to all who came out and we will see you at our next workshop - AUGUST 11TH!
Executive Producer. :)
